A fallen figure collapses into a landscape that is indistinguishable from flesh. Rendered in violent reds, bruised pinks, and raw streaks of ochre, the body appears to dissolve into a world made of blood and bodily fluid. The scene echoes the ancient image of the dying Gaul, but here the warrior is both subject and environment. He sees himself not only himself dying but his reality. The ground bleeds into sky, muscle into earth, self into consequence. Death is no longer symbolic, it is spreading, unavoidable. The question lingers in the paint itself; you died for your land and now you are the land, was it worth it?
